Why Won't They Listen?

Remarkably, some of President Bush's strongest adversaries are now on the right -- conservatives are helping to drive his approval numbers down.

It's not tough to figure out how this happened: It's the President's handling of the immigration issue. Here's how President Bush needs to solve the problem: Tie the percentage of illegals that will be regularized to the percentage reduction in the number of illegals entering the country. That will convince conservatives that the President is serious about border security and accountability -- and will largely assauge their wrath and frustration over what seems like a plan that's determined to offer legal status to illegals without any efforts to secure the border.

Then, proceed with the Hugh Hewitt twelve-word plan:

Win the war.
Confirm the judges.
Cut the taxes.
Control the spending.

With all due respect, why don't we just enforce the border and the laws for, oh say, five years. Then figure out what to do with any remaining illegals?

Nah, it makes far too much sense!
