Kennedy to Rehab

So Patrick Kennedy is off to rehab for prescription pain medication in the wake of his car accident.

Good for him. I have nothing but respect for people who realize that an addiction is damaging their life, and have the courage and character to do something about it.

As long as that's what's really going on, that is. Kennedy has blamed Ambien for the debacle -- but in the cases where Ambien has been responsible for odd, sleep-walking like behavior, one doesn't remember doing anything.

Here's Kennedy's statement about the episode from yesterday, and it sounds remarkably detailed for someone who doesn't remember a thing. One would be inclined to give Kennedy the benefit of the doubt, perhaps, but his history of bad behavior doesn't make that leap of faith easy.

Too bad the Capitol Police didn't test Kennedy at the time. That way, if it really was an innocent mistake, everyone would know it; if it wasn't, he could be held accountable, like the rest of us. And we'd know whether he was using "rehab" as nothing more than an easy way out of a difficult situation, or -- as it was intended to be -- a real opportunity to change his life for the better.

If you or I were to have a one car accident at two in the morning, then stagger around in front of the police, do you believe we could avoid a breathalyzer test?

I want to know WHO told the patrolmen not to test this guy, THAT'S the scandal.

If you or I were drinking in the early afternoon, and then we shot someone in the face with a shotgun, do you believe we could avoid being questioned by the police until the next morning?

I want to know WHO told the Secret Service to not allow Dick Cheney to be interviewed until the next morning. THAT'S the scandal.

Pete, just to make it easier for you, which of the following five claims have I twisted?

Was Dick Cheney drinking prior to the shooting incident? Yes.[1]

Did Dick Cheney shoot a guy in the face? Yes.[2]

Was a deputy attempoting to interview Dick Cheney the night of the shooting turned back by the Secret Service? Yes.[3]

Would you, or I, or any average American be allowed to not speak to the police immediately following such an incident? No.[4]

Is Pete a hypocrite? Yes.[5]

[1]The Vice President admits that much.

[2]Everyone admits this to be the case.

[3]The police report says he was.

[4]No one with half a brain, (including Pete), would deny that common folks don't walk from these things without consequences.

[5]Pete's post is ample demonstration of hypocrisy.
