The Conservative Conscience
Over at the new Townhall, appealing to the best in the conservative character, Paul Greenberg explains why it would be disaster to try to deport every illegal currently in America -- not to mention being wrong.
And he's quite right. But it seems to me there's nothing wrong with conservatives demanding border security. It's a security measure, of course, in an age of terrorism, but it's also much more: An indicia of sovereignty. A country that can't control its borders (and its citizenship process) is one step away from not being able to control itself.

Swatting flies is not a bad thing, but it's ineffective if you don't shut the window...
Gonzalez should smack up the businesses that routinely hire illegals.
Some easy means of matching a person's proferred SSN to a name and birthdate. The system wouldn't have to reveal anything about SSN entered, only whether or not it matches the given name and birthdate.
NO MATCH = NO HIRE.
That should take care of those who would use an 'anchor baby's' SSN to obtain work fraudulently.
None of that is to say that the border can't be enforced, too.
Sometimes I feel like we're trying to empty the ocean with a teaspoon...
