Demanding Equal Rights

According to this story, Green Party gubernatorial candidate and illegal immigrant activist Peter Camejo said:

"What we are seeing is ... a racist campaign against the Latino community. Our community is in no way harming America. We demand equal rights."

As to whether the illegal immigrant community is "harming" America, people of good conscience can disagree, although it's been well established that illegal immigrants place a net cost of $9 billion on California taxpayers in education, medical care and incarceration costs.

But what's remarkable is the last part of Camejo's declaration -- "we demand equal rights" for illegal aliens. Demand? Really? On what basis does Camejo, or anyone else, for that matter, think that illegals are entitled to demand anything from the citizens of a country they have entred illegally? If I sneak into my neighbor's house, am I entitled to demand room and board there?

And not only is the concept nonsensical, it's strategically foolish.

I demand to use Peter Camejo's house whenever I feel like it. And he better have PIE whenever I get there.
