Out of Gas?
Today, Cal Thomas excoriates the congressional Republicans -- and they deserve it. He references in particular the $100 gas rebate check idea.
Here's what I think the Republicans should be doing:
Continue to support the President on the war – and vote on measures that highlight Democratic weakness on national defense. Pass immigration reform that emphasizes security – and links normalization of illegals living here to reductions in the number of new illegals entering the country. Move President Bush’s judicial nominees through the Senate Judiciary Committee and onto the floor. Demonstrate seriousness about reducing the size, scope and prerogatives of government, through voting for spending reductions. Emphasize the ideological differences between the parties by pushing more of the tax cuts that are responsible for the strong economy.
To that, I'd add: Treat the American people like adults and explain why gas prices are high -- and admit there's little that any politician can do to change that in the short run. Point out that if Bill Clinton hadn't vetoed drilling in ANWR when the Republican Congress passed a bill allowing it about a decade ago, new sources of oil would be coming online now. And then -- for those who are eager to embrace the "sacrifice" who absence so many liberals have decried -- ask them to conserve in order to hold prices down.

1-Ditch CAFE. It's a mirage, a placebo. In which alternative universe can the conservation of a commodity be increased by MAKING IT CHEAPER TO USE?
2-Mandate that in three years ALL vehicles sold in America should have flex-fuel capability for ethanol. Exempt only diesels.
3-Mandate that in six years ALL vehicles sold in America should have flex-fuel capability for ethanol, methanol, and butanol. Exempt only diesels. (Diesels ALREADY can run on bio-diesel, if built since 1990.)
4-Begin also in the sixth year to reduce the 51 cent per gallon subsidy for ethanol production by 10% per year, until it is gone.
5-Sit back and watch as CONSUMER CHOICE, THE FREE MARKET, AND THE PROFIT MOTIVE combine to impel America toward a cheap, reliable energy future.
Cheap petroleum will play a role in this future, but only if bio-fuels become a feared competitor to the petroleum industry.

Not likely to happen now. It's starting to dawn on Republicans that they can pimp for people's vote just like the Democrats did for more than 40 years.
