The Sickness of "White Guilt"
In a provocative article today, Shelby Steele argues that the US is so delicate with its insurgent enemies in Iraq because of "white guilt;" he argues that "[b]ecause dissociation from the racist and imperialist stigma is so tied to legitimacy in this age of white guilt, America's act of going to war can have legitimacy only if it seems to be an act of social work . . .."
Hm. If this were the case, the reluctance to make a big "footprint" in Iraq with a larger force wouldn't have been to assuage the Iraqi psyche, but the American.
