Dubai Divestiture

This article in The Washington Post explains that the UAE intends to divest itself of all U.S. port interests.

Of course, the Democrats, for the first time glimpsing an opportunity to seem both relevant and constructive in the debate over national security, aren't prepared to let go. On radio, both Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) and Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) have said that "the devil is in the details" -- presumably a quote from their talking points.

At this point, however, it seems ungracious and impolitic, even, to insist on pressing forward with a vote, as the Democrats are. The UAE has been a partner to the US in the war on terror, and since they willing to withdraw, what is the point in humiliating them by making sure they know they weren't wanted? Seems to me that the Democrats, once again, are putting politics over national security -- not necessarily, mind you, in opposing the ports deal, but by repudating the UAE company even after it's volunteered to go away . . . just to "drive home" their toughness.

But there's plenty of blame to go around. No one from the Administration made a public, readily understood argument in favor of the ports deal going forward, or adequately responded to the concerns voiced by Democrats and Republicans alike.

And finally, who urged the President -- who has declined to veto even gargantuan spending bills -- to choose this issue for a veto threat?
