"Manna From Heaven" for the GOP

That's how this Washington Post story describes Nancy Pelosi's decision to call for withdrawal from Iraq.

Obviously, I agree. At best, the Dems look incoherent; at worst, defeatist.

Bill Kristol is a genuinely smart man in terms of politics and policy. Until Pelosi's endorsing the Murtha Option, he felt that the Democrats would retake the House.

I never shared that belief because I've never underestimated the ability of the Pelosi's of the world to make incredibly stupid comments. To say that I feel vindicated now is understatement.

Mort Kondracke said he thinks Pelosi was basically forced to take this position to placate a majority of House Democrats who agree with the Murtha Option. He said it was an attempt to stave off a call for a caucus vote on the subject.

Democratic leaders don't want to vote on record on this subject. First, they don't want to give Republicans more ammunition for their argument that the Democratic Party is the Party of Defeat. Second, they don't want to make public a debate within the Democratic Party that may show divisions within the party.

Pelosi's tactic fails on both counts. First, her statement, as the ranking member of the House, clearly identifies the Democratic Party as being actively IN FAVOR OF DEFEAT in Iraq. Second, comparing her statement with that of Senator Lieberman actually highlights a serious division within the Democratic Party.
