Churchill Dinner: Fabulous!
Had a ball at the Claremont Institute's Churchill Dinner. It was a treat to get to meet syndicated talk show host Tammy Bruce -- not to mention Powerline's John Hinderaker and his lovely wife and daughter.
Honoree Mark Steyn was funny, brilliant and all-around fantastic. Leavened with a good dose of his trademark wit, his talk nonetheless made some very serious points about the struggle between the western world (and soon, it's feared, the United States alone) and the forces of Islamofascism. He also pointed out four features of the US' civic life that make it happily and distinctly different from Europe: Our religiosity; gun ownership; our (non-socialized) health care system; and the (relative) responsiveness of our elected representatives.
Steyn is charming in person, and (predictably) a gifted speaker. He's a true freedom fighter, and a worthy recipient of the Institute's Henry Salvatori Prize.

That's great. So did you all raise money for the NRA? Was Wayne La Peter there? Yes, our guns sure do set us apart from Europe, though I'm not sure how "happily." You might want to ask the thousands of families of those murdered by guns how happy they are that we're armed to the teeth.
And yes, let's not forget one of the hallmarks of our society that distinguishes us from those low-life European countries: limited access to healthcare. Those who can afford it have the best the world has to offer; those who don't can beg and pray for it, but are otherwise screwed. As it should be. The same pretty much goes for responsiveness from elected officials -- if you can afford it, they're quite responsive.
You should do some more research on the effectiveness of socialized medicine before you sing its praises. Our system of health care is far from perfect, but is more efficient than those in Canada and European countries.
Dan: I know what you mean about the "trolls." My view has has been that their arguments are generally so weak, and rely so heavily on ad hominem (or ad feminam, as the case may be) attacks, that I let them lurk as living illustrations of the left's limitations . . .
What is Tammy Bruce like in person?
