Governor Does the Right Thing

In all the other events that have been transpiring, there simply hasn't been time to discuss the California legislature's outrageous decision to pass a gay marriage bill -- even though California's voters overwhelmingly approved Prop 22 just five years ago, thereby explicitly limiting marriage in California to one man / one woman.

The arrogance and total disregard for the will of the people is breathtaking. (That's what gerrymandered districts will yield -- legislators with no realistic concern about being tossed out, no matter how inappropriate their behavior. So please support Prop. 77.)

Fortunately, Governor Schwarzenegger has pledged to veto the bill. That isn't a guarantee that he intends to run for re-election (I think he won't make that decision until after he sees the results of this fall's special election), but it's at least some evidence he hasn't decided not to.

One quibble: The AP story says that

The Republican governor had indicated previously that he would veto the bill, saying the debate over same-sex marriage should be decided by voters or the courts.

The courts?!! Under what authority could the courts find a "right" to gay marriage that hasn't existed since the country's or the state's founding? Ah, the marvels of a "living" Constitution.
