Reason for Hope in CA

So far, so good.

Voters decisively rejected Prop. 82, the universal preschool initiative. And a library bond was defeated, as well.

Unreconstructed liberal Phil Angelides will be Governor Schwarzenegger's opponent in the fall. The clear constrasts between them will benefit the Governor.

Most significantly, Brian Bilbray defeated Fran Busby in Duke Cunningham's old district. There's reason for optimism; Bilbray, a former lobbyist, was about the weakest candidate Republicans could have chosen to represent them, even as Busby ran as a moderate (although her "you don't need papers for voting" comment definitely hurt her). Moreover, there were other Republicans in the race, which peeled off support that otherwise would have gone to Bilbray. Even so, there's no room for Republican complacency. Had they lost this district, it would have been the sign of serious, serious trouble. The fact that they won it doesn't necessarily mean that all is smooth sailing ahead.

Even so, it 's fun once again to see Democrats reduced to claiming a moral victory.

It'd be interesting to see what happens when the mid-terms hit. Bilbray may be in congress for a very short amount of time.

As Kos said, the election showed that local issues are actually important.

But the Republicans won CA-50 fair and square.
