Carol Platt Liebau: UN-believable

UN-believable

Writing here, I criticized Peter Beinart's assertion that:

The vehicles for such [moral] reciprocity are international institutions and international law, something liberals — unlike neoconservatives — have long supported. From NATO and the United Nations to the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, the heyday of Cold War liberalism — the late 1940s — was an extraordinary period of institution building. Those institutions forged the democratic alliance that outlasted Soviet communism.

Beinart apparently believes that the UN can be "rebuilt." He ought to check out this interview with Eric Shawn, the author of The U.N. Exposed: How the United Nations Sabotages America's Security and Fails the World.

Shawn points out that economic self-interest is the determinant of Russian, Chinese and French behavior. How, exactly, does Beinart propose to fix that?

Roving,

Thank you for the background. I had never heard of the FDD. Given the information you provided, I would fully support this organization.

I'm not familiar with all the names you listed. But I am familiar with some. These are the kinds of people putting forth the kind of thinking that America (and the world) should pay attention to.

I'm glad you look into the background and associations of those who promote various ideas for public consideration.

Could you do me a favor and research the associations and history of such groups as MoveOn.org and Code Pink? I'd be interested to learn who these people associate with and what doctrines they support.

What about Noam Chompsky? The ACLU (founded by Roger Baldwin)? The National Lawyers Guild (founded by the Communist Party USA)?

Let me know what you find out about these people and groups. I agree with you that we should know these things in order to form sound judgements about the ideas they stand for.

Greg, Thanks for that! I'm still grinning ear to ear.

And Rovingwire, thanks for that response, tells us a lot more about the substance and depth of liberals visiting Carol's site.

With less than 5% of the world enjoying "freedom" of any kind..and less than 2.5% of the world's population enjoying American-type freedeoms, I find the thought of giving the "international" community any say over my life the worst thing any American should do.

and your point is?

Liberalism since FDR got us here; JFK and Johnson added to it not to mention the State Department, the "intelligence" departments, the Pentagon...all filled to the brim with career, liberal bureaucrats. Same goes for the "education" department and any "....tion" publicly funded group you can name.

I just wish the rapture was near, alas, since I'm not a believer the outcome doesn't affect me.
