How Totally Typical

Read this morning's NY Times op/ed page, and thank your lucky stars that John Kerry isn't president.

He's got an op/ed calling for deadlines in Iraq -- May 15 for forming a government, and then the end of the year for withdrawing American troops, once a government has been formed.

Now, there's nothing wrong with calling for a May 15 deadline for forming a government, as long as we're willing to do something -- what? -- if the deadline isn't met. But how many of us are willing to have the troops withdraw from Iraq if, on May 16, a government hasn't been formed? And on what evidence, exactly, does Kerry base his assertion that "If Iraqis aren't willing to build a unity government in the five months since the election, they're probably not willing to build one at all"? Is he aware of how long it took to come up with the federalist system of government under which we live today? And the Founding Fathers weren't grappling with the kind of security concerns that confront the Iraqis.

What's even worse is Kerry's call for withdrawing troops from Iraq in December. It sends a clear message to the terrorists: Hang on 'til the end of the year, and then work your will. It also sends a message to the Iraqis who want freedom: Better not go out on a limb -- come December, we're outta here.

Kerry believes that the terrorism in Iraq is "fueled in large measure by the majority of Iraqis who want us to leave their country." No, it isn't -- it's fueled by those invested in seeing democracy in Iraq fail. If the insurgents were just pro-Iraqi, they wouldn't be wantonly killing Iraqi men, women, and children. And they're not stupid -- they know that America will leave as soon as the elected government is strong enough to defend itself. The idea that the insurgents want nothing more than America out of Iraq is a fiction, and one that it's shameful for Kerry to propagate.

Apparently, Kerry looks at Iraq and sees Vietnam (remember what happened to the South Vietnamese and the Cambodians after America acceded to the wishes of North Vietnamese who supposedly wanted nothing more than the Americans out of their country?). That tells us nothing about the true state of affairs and the best policy for Iraq -- it tells us only about Kerry's limited world view. After all, if all you've got is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.

It's the left's solution to everything and anything. Just curl up in the fetal position and it will all go away.

I, for one, am glad to see Kerry and the other lieutenants of the looney left being so public with their non-ideas.

It helps define the choices for Americans.

There is one party who believes in victory and will complete that victory - the Republican Party.

The Democratic Party only believes in defeat and retreat. The more Americans get to see this the less likely they are to allow the Democrats the opportunity to fulfill that vision.
