She's what we Catholics call "a revert". She was raised a Catholic and now has reverted to form. I find it also quite lovely that she brought her husband to the faith and that their marriage received the sacramental seal. I have never read any of her novels and haven't seen the film versions in their entirety, either. Based on this article and Amy Wellborn's review, I just might put this novel on my list.
