A Hopeful Sign . . .

Just checked out the World blog (HT: Hugh Hewitt) and read that Harriet Miers is a member of an evangelical, even -- dare one say it -- "fundamentalist" church.

Biblical fundamentalism is, in a sense, analogous to strict construction, insofar as the idea is that the words of a given text say what they mean, and mean what they say. Almost literally.

If Ms. Miers' approach to jurisprudence is similar to her approach to religion, conservatives may be in fine shape, indeed.

I agree Carol. It sounds like President Bush knew what he was doing. I'm still holding my breath on this one, but am a whole lot more encouraged now than I was at 9 this morning.

She won't be in fine shape if her legal arguments are as poorly supported by evidence as that used to to support creationism - of which I'm assuming she's a firm believer.

p.s. Quid Pro Quo?
"During Bush's first term as governor, Gonzales used information turned up by Miers [Bush's recent nominee to the Supreme Court] to persuade a local judge to excuse Bush from jury duty, a civic task that would have forced him to disclose his 1976 arrest for drunken driving in Maine."

Draino, draino, draino, why all the negative vibes?

The hard right wing has been salivating for a 10 seat Senate majority and a conservative President to try and force through some wing-nutty candidate like Michael Luttig or Janice Rogers-Brown. Instead, the President fell back to his modus operandi and nominated a crony who was suggested to him by multiple Democratic Senators.

More than that, the hard core Republican right (see Carol's posts for example) spent the entire Roberts confirmation cycle arguing it was akin to treason to question the President's choice of nominee. So the conservative Senators have to support Ms. Miers's nomination even though doing so is tantamount to spitting on their base. (Once again, look at how Carol is attempting to turn a sow's ear into a silk purse, and how rapidly mark and rzafft fell in line.)
