Becoming Ever Clearer

As time passes, the shrieks of outrage against the federal government that emanated from our television screens (and too many of our radios) last week are starting to seem very overwrought, and more than a little passe.

Those of us who advised rationality and calm while order was restored, people were rescued and evacuations were organized can take some comfort in noting that, now that journalists are actually taking time to sort through the issues, even The New York Times (in this piece) is slowly coming to terms with the fact that the lawlessness and a lot of the trouble in New Orleans must be laid at the feet of its feckless and terminally incompetent governor. (Best quote from the article? In an interview, she acknowledged that she did not specify what sorts of soldiers [New Orleams needed from the federal government]. "Nobody told me that I had to request that," Ms. Blanco said.)

And even The Times seems to concede that the President couldn't have simply seized control from the mayor and governor without some significant political fallout. As I noted yesterday, "Imagine the cries of racism and sexism if President Bush had steamrollered Louisiana's female governor and New Orleans' Africa-American mayor."

No, the Democratic governor and mayor have hardly covered themselves in glory. But what's even worse is the transparent attempt on the part of the national Democratic Party -- even as mounting evidence is tending to exonerate the feds of an increasing amount of the blame -- to use the catastrophe for blatant political ends. Fox News is reporting that "A new Democratic effort to whip up indignation about the Bush administration's handling of Hurricane Katrina also tried to raise money for Democratic candidates."

So helpe me understand . . . while the Democrats are refusing to participate in a bipartisan congressional investigation to help prevent and correct any flaws in the federal response to Katrina, they're all too happy to use the tragedy to raise some money. Wow. Once again demonstrates that there is some behavior so crass that one can't even make it up.

In the meantime, while the Democrats obstruct and politicize, the rest of us will work hard to comfort, sustain and rebuild. For, as Tony Snow points out, that's the American way.

But the Democrats needn't be surprised if their support continues to erode. Through their behavior, it's clear they haven't a clue about the real heart and soul of America.

As the layers of this disaster 'onion' get slowly peeled off, less and less should be heard from Democrats crying about Bush not caring about black people. If GOP leadership has any guts at all, which is, I realize, very questionable, it will proceed with the investigation Democrats bleated for but now say they will decline to join, and let the chips fall where they may. More Louisiana heads likely will be thwacked by those chips than heads in the Bush administration.

Carol -

Deaths of fellow Americans are never "passe"

This administation has proven that it doesn't care about it's own citizens, whether they be black or white.

They only care about letting their buddies make money and to make sure their photo ops look pretty.

Since you have all the answers here, maybe you can clear something up for me. If most of Louisiana's problems are because of the Governor, how do you explain Mississippi? Is Haley Barbour also "feckless and terminally incompetent?"

More than a week after Katrina residents of Biloxi were still waiting for relief from the Federal government. Venting the rage a goodly number of Mississippians are feeling, Trent Lott said, "Something needed to happen. Michael Brown has been acting like a private, instead of a general. When you're in the middle of a disaster, you can't stop to check the legal niceties or to review FEMA regulations before deciding to help Mississippians knocked flat on their backs. FEMA needs to just say 'yes' and get it done."

As you spin vigorously defending the Bush administration's handling of the aftermath of Katrina, you have to be able to answer one simple question...

How do you explain Mississippi?

Just to make the distinctions clear, this is how an adult acts...

I went to Florida a few days after President Bush did to observe the damage from Hurricane Andrew. I had dealt with a lot of natural disasters as governor, including floods, droughts, and tornadoes, but I had never seen anything like this. I was surprised to hear complaints from both local officials and residents about how the Federal Emergency Management Agency was handling the aftermath of the hurricane. Traditionally, the job of FEMA director was given to a political supporter of the President who wanted some plum position but who had no experience with emergencies. I made a mental note to avoid that mistake if I won. Voters don't chose a President based on how he'll handle disasters, but if they're faced with one themselves, it quickly becomes the most important issue in their lives.
