One Smart Democrat
New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson is one of the smartest Democrats out there (too bad -- for his political ambitions-- about all the unpleasantness at Los Alamos during his tenure as Energy Secretary). Richardson is focusing on border control -- a big issue in his state, but also everywhere in the Southwest.
Yes, it's true: Richardson's Hispanic heritage allows him to crack down on illegal immigration from the South with a reduced risk of being accused of anti-Latino racism. But the fact is that he's doing what needs to be done -- and he (and his party) will receive the credit for it, while his Republican counterparts apparently continue to dither, to their detriment.

Perhaps we should actually go after those businesses and individuals that knowingly hire illegal immigrants. Slap them with some serious fines so they won't turn around and do it again, and again, and again.
This is one of my hot-button issues, and whichever party grabs onto it and gives it more than lipservice will dominate the political horizon.
Seems to me neither party is real interested in the problem, though, and looks to cover their political a-- more than solving the problem.
The (R)'s want to placate business, and allow illegals to flood in.
The (D)'s want as many to come in because they usually vote (D).......Legally or otherwise.
I live in Phx, AZ, and deal with this garbage daily.......Either in my own line of work (Health Care) where they are bankrupting the system, or in my children's classes where a reported 1/10 of the time of instruction is filtered directly to kids who don't speak English. --> Ya, I'm real thrilled about my kids wasting 10% of their classtime watching their teacher spend time with 1 or 2 kids in each class who don't "comprende". --> And then another 10% on the kids who are out of control (but that's a different issue).
All I hear are excuses from each side about the vastness of the problem.......Well, this is what they are elected to do. SOLVE THE DAMN PROBLEM!!
Here's a 5 Point Program.......And it will work.
1. Put up a wall (1/2 mile inside the U.S. border)
2. Put signs on the wall not to approach
3. Guard the wall with U.S. troops
4. Patrol the wall with military helicopters.
5. Shoot anyone coming within 1/4 mile of the wall.
It can be done........It must be done.......And it will eventually be done as a matter of national survival.
Reality isn't always pretty, but it is always real.
