Not As Bad as All That
David Brooks bemoans the "anger" of Lou Dobbesian positions entering the mainstream of American politics.
Let's set aside Brooks' point on free trade, which is, in fairness, most of the column. What caught my eye is his aside that "Once there was a majority in favor of liberal immigration policies, but apparently that’s not true anymore, at least if you judge by campaign rhetoric."
Well, that depends on what one means by "liberal immigration policies." It strikes me that Brooks' tut-tutting is incredibly unfair to Americans who welcome legal immigrants with both arms, but who are rightly appalled at the de facto nullification of immigration laws that the current system essentially constitutes.
I don't hear many Americans calling for new, more restrictive immigration legislation. What they are calling for -- and are entitled to -- is proper (and actual) enforcement of the laws that already exist.

You don't hear Americans calling for restriction of "legal" immigration - yet. Pat Buchanan cites these figures in his new book: in the 1960's, before the 1965 Immigration Act, whites were 89% of the population of the US. Whites are now 67% and falling fast. When people wake up to this fact, which is never discussed in the MSM, you will hear more concern over the effects of legal immigration. People who try to raise the issue of legal immigration are labelled racists, so those concerned about immigration hide behind the "illegal" issue, to avoid being castigated. Our very existence as a culture, as a people is being threatened, and yet we cannot speak of it. Why not?
Please, let us refrain from the term "Dobbesian".
For the life of me, I can't see why this man should be elevated by a term that indicates he has launched a new line of thinking or has a mass following. Rather, Lou Dobbs should be scorned and shamed into retirement. The man is a blithering idiot, for goodness sake.
There is a majority in favor of enforcing the immigration laws.
I suspect Brooks deplores this, but isn't honest enough to say so.
There are plenty of folks who think all immigration should stop, but the first step is to stop illegal immigration. If this country is to retain the culture it has had for the past two centuries, it cannot continue to be invaded by foreigners as it has been for the past 40 years. This got to stop NOW!
The great majority of recent immigrants are hispanics who come intent on reclaiming great parts of the US for Mexico. They have no intention to assimilate and become Americans. They intend to remain mexicans, even if they are given US citizenship. Many of them claim that Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, and parts of Colorado were stolen from them, and that they are coming to reclaim those lands. The people are nothing less than an invading army. The must be expelled.
