Churchill Lost, Too
John Howard has lost reelection.
While there's only one Winston Churchill, Howard is a man of courage and conviction. Australian history will treat him kindly.
Does his defeat foreshadow anything for our elections next year? Hard to say. No doubt in Australia the siren song of withdrawing troops from Iraq was a popular one, but Howard's opponent likewise chose to govern as an "economic conservative" (take that, Hillary and Barack!).
It's hard to project Australian election results onto US politics -- just as it would be difficult to argue that Sarkozy's election in France portends sweeping Republican victories next year.

Carol, elections go in cycles.
Most democracies seem to have settle on basic ideas. One such idea is "economic conservative". Withdrawing troops from Iraq does not seem to have been a large factor in Australia. More that people seeking a little change but still wanting "economic conservative".
Time will tell about Australia and the USA.
Howard will be remembered as the petty, small-minded racist that he was. A man that supported Apartheid South Africa and wanted to stop all Asian immigration. It's only fitting that he also lost his seat in the election. The man was an embarrassment to the country.
