The Female Voice

Here, gossip columnist Cindy Adams attributes part of Katie Couric's problems at CBS to her voice:

Her speech level is pitched too high. Harsh news, life's gritty realities, Iraq's body count must be delivered in lower notes. It adds to the story's weight. If that's sexist, sorry. It's fact. What God giveth, CBS cannot changeth. Her girlish voice, girlish figure, girlish face is why we adored America's sweetheart. Our Katie - not their Kenny.

It's not fair, but Cindy Adams may be right. Hillary Clinton has a similar problem. She is a serial yeller on the stump, perhaps believing that it injects her otherwise controlled and somewhat rigid persona with an element of "passion." Either she is unable to control herself or unaware that when women, in particular, try to yell, it raises the pitch of their voices to a point when they sounds like they're shrieking harridans.

Men, given the lower register of their voices, have an advantage. It's both easier to signal "gravitas" and "passion" with a baritone, or even a tenor. Not a pretty truth, but that's just the fact.

TR supposedly said speak softly and carry a big stick. So lower the rhetoric and maybe people will listen. By the way, what is HRC defence policy?

HRC - Defense?

Talk to them and try to understand how we're the source of their problems?
