Carol Platt Liebau: Moral Titans of the Left

Moral Titans of the Left

So Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Rigoberta Menchu and other leftist luminaries are begging America not to interfere in Cuba while Fidel recuperates. Obviously, the US is planning nothing of the sort.

But the appeal is itself amazing. Tells you everything you need to know about those making it -- that (leftist) ideology trumps natural, human and every other kind of rights. What are they afraid of? That the United States is going to "invade" . . . and do what?! Is the current repressive, ugly government superior to letting the Cuban people be free, simply because it's Fidel's?

Over the years, a lot of leftists have argued for the lifting of the US embargo on Cuba, on the grounds that it only hurts the poor Cuban people. Here's a chance for them to have something better . . . but the leftists won't have it, if it means shunting Dear Leader Fidel aside.

If you considering giving them Iraqi democracy and freedom (Bush style) forget it, no one is interested.

I'm trying to keep track. In the past six weeks or so, you have advocated invading or bombing the following countries:

Iran
Syria
Lebanon
North Korea
Cuba

Not to mention hugely building up the force we have in Iraq.

Assuming that there is actually a serious thought behind this call for worldwide engagement, where exactly do you propose we get the troop strength to fight five wars at the same time, especially when our military seems pretty stretched right now? Would you support a draft? Would you actually volunteer to serve yourself? If you think there's another country anywhere in the world that would supply troops, can you name it? (Hint: Not Britain. Blair might try, but the rest of the Labor Party would start dusting off those spikes outside the Tower of London for his head if he did.)

Also, how do you propose paying for these five wars? Would the fifth invasion of a foreign country finally make you reconsider your loathing of taxes on the wealthiest one percent? Of the estate tax?

I understand that you see enemies all over the world, and feel that the USA has the moral right -- if not duty -- to kill as many of them as it can. And I won't argue the morality of that now (although I do find the yearning for mass killings across the world slightly incongruous with your great respect for life). But I would like to know if there is any practical thought behind your proposed military strategy, or is it just a knee-jerk desire to wipe out anyone who annoys you?

Notice China, Saudi Arabia and Africa don't make Carol's kill list. So much for the ideology of giving people democracy and freedom via war.

Not trying to read the post, obviously. Carol quite clearly RIDICULES the very notion of a military intervention in Cuba.

Reading. Is. Fundamental.

This is what Carol wrote about the idea of invading Cuba:

"What are they afraid of? That the United States is going to "invade" . . . and do what?! Is the current repressive, ugly government superior to letting the Cuban people be free, simply because it's Fidel's?"

Carol is not ridiculing the idea of invading. She is ridiculing those who suggest that it would be worse than the status quo. In fact, she specifically links invasion to "letting the Cuban people be free." Because in CarolWorld, you are only truly free if you've been killed in an American-started war.

Well you see what you want to see, don't you wrabkin? Carol is NOT advocating invasion of Cuba. Most other posts are, in my mind, speaking of the difference between fighting the despots or letting them oppress. Each situation is different, but you just like to think those on the right are war-mongers. What paranoia.

Please don't challenge the orthodoxy.

I'm content to let Carol clarify her own remarks. I took it one way, you took it another way. I apologize for accusing you of not having read it, though.

Thanks for the apology. As we all know, it's easy to get carried away at the keyboard (I actually deleted my first post here on rereading -- it was far too harsh and unpleasant for what should be a discussion.) We can all agree to disagree -- but thanks for doing it with grace!

Who would Jesus carpet bomb next?

Crikey, editor, when was the last time ANYONE was carpet bombed by anyone? In fact, were you even born the last time it happened? I'm going out on a limbing and guessing you were not.
