Carol Platt Liebau: British Terror Plot

British Terror Plot

My twin brother, sister-in-law and baby niece fly frequently between London and New York, which makes the news about the attempted terror plot even more chilling. The inimitable Lorie Byrd has the complete round-up.

It's worth wondering whether the New York Times and those on the left who agree with its position on the war are going to express concern about whether British authorities "eavesdropped" on the suspects. Did they tap their phones? Intrude on their "privacy" in any way? Of course, if they were in the UK rather than the US, than our constitutional guarantees don't apply, but one would expect the same standard of morality to be applied notwithstanding.

Events like this are a signal reminder of why it's a bad idea to reveal classified, secret programs that are designed to inhibit or prevent terrorism before it happens.

For my part, this thwarted plot is a reminder of why the government needs to be able to have access to programs that help them access information about threats like these -- and thwart them.

They do those sneak-n-peak searches in the UK, according to a security expert I heard this morning.

Sounds like it is time to do a pre-emptive strike on Pakistan and also UK who is harbouring terrorists. Turn both of them into failed states like Iraq and kill many of them for hating our freedom.

According to BBC sources the "principal characters" suspected of being involved in the plot were British-born. There are also understood to be links to Pakistan.

OK editor/dhead, what's your brilliant idea for dealing with these people?

Yes, be afraid, be very afraid. Don't stop to check what your government is doing to you, that's the way the terrorists win. Don't think about about the laws the administration is breaking, don't take a second to wonder if the ludicrous invasion of Iraq has made us less safe, and whatever you do, don't you dare consider that the Bush administration has done just about nothing to protect the country against terrorism, and that the DHS is a bureaucratic disaster. Just be afraid and vote Republican!

Get rid of the incompetents in Bush's administration. Clean the House of rubber stampers who refuse to allow debate and are not doing any oversite.

Bring in former Bush, Reagan and Clinton advisors and get rid of the crazy radical right extremists that think they can build a world empire via military campaigns.

When we have former high ranking officials (too numerous to list) saying Bush policies are leading to WWIII, we should pay attention and change course.

Editor and wrabkin,

And what should all these brilliant Bush 41, Reagan and Clinton officials do once they are returned to positions of authority? (As if their past actions weren't part of the reason the world is in the state it's in; remember when the Sudanese offered to deliver Osama Bin Ladan and the brilliant officials said, "No thanks.")

And what should we do about the brilliant Bush 41 and Reagan officials who are already in the Bush 43 administration, like Cheney, Rumsfeld (Ford Administration, actually), etc.

The fact is, editor/dhead spews snide remarks, but has yet to propose anything concrete.

wrabkin comment lacks the intellectual honesty to distinguish between "done just about nothing" and "not done enough/not done it well."

Editor and wrabkin comments typify the vain leftist mindset that it is still "all about us" rather than about a skillful and determine foe intent on killing us.

No doubt the next time wrabkin sees a young man of Pakistani descent fiddling with a cell phone on an airplane, wrabkin's will be concerned that the government is listening to the phone call.

Unlike Wile E., I've actually met young men of Pakistani descent. Shockingly, they weren't terrorists, or even terrorist sympathizers. And yes, they used cell phones. Somehow I managed not to pee in my pants with fear or demand that someone in the government kill them to make me feel secure. And somehow I survived the encounter.

Tell me, Wile, what is it like to go through life terrified of everyone who doesn't look exactly like you? How does it feel to live with the delusion that everyone in the world is trying to kill you, and that you must kill them first? I guess it must make you feel kind of important. And when you call for all anonymous strangers to be executed or bombed, I guess that makes you feel powerful. What a lovely way to live.

wrabkin,

If we are going to go through the "some of my best friends are..." routine, then I should mention the Pakistani, Lebanese, Palistian, etc., friends I have. Doesn't that make us both feel oh so cosmopolitan and tolerant? Do you get goosebumps, too?

As for your question, "what is it like to go through life terrified of everyone..." I wouldn't know, since I don't live that way. I suppose it is no worse than going through life willfully blind or sanctimonious as some people do. Or to make excuses when anonymous people get executed or bombed by terrorists so that one can feel enlighted and liberal-minded about oneself.

But enough about "us". If you believe the threat is overstated, you should be complaining that the goverment has done too much, not to little.

Have at it.

As for me, I'm not "terrified". I'm determined.

There is an enemy. Do you believe that, Editor? Do you believe that, Wrabkin?

They have been engaged in war with us for decades. Do you believe that?

If so, what should we do? The Democrats have been asked this same question for years. To date, there has been no response.

Greg,

If there's an enemy, we should fight them.

That is, we should fight THEM. We should not use them as an excuse to invade a country that has nothing to do with them.

You seem to think that if there's an enemy out there, it's good enough to go hit someone, anyone. I'd suggest actually finding the enemy and hitting them. This, apparently, defines me as rooting for failure.

Oh, and Wile -- I never said anything about best friends. Must be hard to read when you're quaking in fear all the time.

The Democrats are controlled by the godless Left and they both want America to lose the war on terrorism such is their self-hate.

The equations are simple.

What's bad for America is good fore the Democrarts.

What's good for America is bad for the Democrats.

The people sense this, which is why the Dims will lose in November.

It'll be interesting to see if Carol still supports the most incompetent President and Administration now that her brother came close to getting killed.

She should have known better. A world leader doesn't run around like a drunken cowboy claiming he can kill and torture anyone he wants without getting blow back.

If there is a serious concern about an enemy, think a little harder when you vote. Anyone who spent 20 years as a drunk is not qualified to be President.
