Amusingly Acerbic

Andrea Peyser writes an entertaining account of a Ted Kennedy book-promotion event with little children -- focusing on the irony of the Prince of Chappaquiddick having a dog named "Splash."

In May 2000, a two-page police report pertaining to a fatal accident that had taken place near Midland, Texas, in 1963 was made public. It contained the information that 17-year-old Laura Welch had run a stop sign, causing the death of the sole occupant of the vehicle hers had struck. According to that report, the future First Lady had been driving her Chevrolet sedan on a clear night shortly after 8 p.m. on 6 November 1963 when she entered an intersection without heeding the stop sign and there collided with the Corvair sedan driven by 17-year-old Michael Douglas. Also in the car with Laura Welch was a passenger, 17-year-old Judy Dykes.

Two biographies of the First Lady refer to her as having been going 50 mph at the time of the collision. The speed limit on that portion of road was 55 mph. According to the police report neither driver had been drinking, but no tests were performed.

News accounts from 1963 reported the young man as having been thrown from his car and dying of a broken neck; he was pronounced dead on arrival at Midland Memorial Hospital.

And this has to do with what? Did she flee the scene of the accident and only report it many hours later? No, Laura and Judy were taken from the scene to the hospital themselves.

Now if Laura Bush had gone around naming her dog "Crash", there might be some reason to question her integrity.

Please, go back to some left wing nuthead blog.

How long did Cheney go missing after shooting someone in the face?

I share your politics and morals, not Ted Kennedy’s, but does it really accomplish anything to bring up Chappaquiddick almost forty years after it happened, when Kennedy is simply reading a book to some children?

Carol calls Ted Kennedy the Prince of Chappaquiddick.

The next time you mount your high horse to bemoan the terrible lack of civility and negative tone of the commentors on your blog--you may want to remember that the fish rots from the head down.

Yes, LQ, cheap shotting Ted Kennedy allows Carol to maintain her false sense of moral superiority. Carol's goal is not civilized public discourse--it is to demonize the people that hold different political views.

Like all members of the wingnut contingent, Carol knows that the far right wing ideas stand no chance on their own in the market place of ideas. The only way they can hope to achieve their fringe agenda is by lying, vituperation and demonization of their opponents.

CoPioneer the Dimmer asked, "And this has to do with what?"

It has to do with the fact that every time Carol writes about Ted Kennedy she tosses in something about Chappiquiddick, but no one on the progressive side calls Mrs. Bush "State High 349" Laura.

It's just a constant reminder of Carol's complete and utter lack of class despite her law school diploma and her San Marino address.

Sorry, Dittohead, but that logic does not fly. I have been through more than my share of horrible things and I do not do illegal things which place others in danger. By your logic, we should excuse him because he had it rough, well, what the heck, let's let 75% of the people out of San Quinton, or lets forgive all of the pedifiles because they were once abused themselves.

Are you saying Ted is guilty of murder? Is Laura also guilty of murder? They both had car accidents in which someone died. What proof do you have that Ted is guilty of murder?

What qualifies you to be judge, jury and executor?

When were you two brothers assasinated?

I wasn't sure why I posted the tragedies in the Kennedy family. It was not to suggest that Kennedy or anyone is above the law. I definitely don't believe that.

Perhaps, I'd prefer we were human and not denigrate everything in America's history. Carol's attack is a cheap shot.

There are no statute of limitations on murder. If there is evidence to try Ted then file a case.

DH, did I imply that Kenedy was guilty of murder? I do not think I did, all I said is that your argument that he had it rough should make us all stand back and say it was ok. As far as I know Kenedy was never charged with murder, he was drunk, did he intentionally kill her? He could have, but I don't think so, he was too wasted to even know what he was doing, from what I hear. Kenedy is not my Senator, so I really do not get myself involved with debating about him. What would be the point? I will never be in a position where I have to choose if I will vote for him.

I'm sorry I thought you were commenting about Kennedy because that is the topic here.

I already stated I don't believe anyone is above the law.

Given that there is no statute of limitation for murder, do you feel that Kennedy should be brought in?
