Another Reason Not to Cheat

Remember the jokes when "Fatal Attraction" came out in the late '80's? The idea was that if your husband/boyfriend said at the movie's end, "Wow, that was scary," -- well, he wasn't cheating. If he said quickly, "That could never happen!" then you had a problem.

One wag once said that "Fatal Attraction" was better than saltpeter for preventing male cheating. If this is true, then it's part of the same genre. The whole Abramoff scandal springing from bad male behavior and a failed romance? Well, stranger things have happened.

It's because they removed the commandment from the public square: "thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, and definitely not the donkey".

From Sleepless in Seattle:

Sam: Didn't you see Fatal Attraction?

Jonah: You wouldn't let me!

Sam: Well I saw it and it scared the s*** out of me. It scared the s*** out of every man in America.

Here's another little tale for all you Abramoff fans out there.(Did I mention that Jack Abramoff was a Republican uber-lobbyist and Bush Pioneer.) This one is really juicy--so juicy, in fact, you may think I am embellishing it, so here is a reference.

Gus Boulis, an immigrant from Canada, builds a fleet of casino boats, Sun Cruz lines.

Jack Abramoff and partner Robert Kidan decide they want to own Sun Cruz, so they pressure Boulis to sell. This pressure included bribing Bob Ney (R-OH) to say nasty things about Boulis in the Congressional Record. (This bribe was paid by Michael Scanlon.)

Although Boulis eventually sells the casino line there is much bad blood and bickering between Boulis and Abramoff/Kidan, which continues until Feb 6, 2001, when Boulis is the victim of a gangland style hit.

Earlier this year, three men were arrested for the murder of Gus Boulis. The three men had been paid over $100K in "consulting fees" by Abramoff's partner, Robert Kidan. Details on what they were consulted about is sketchy--Kidan doesn;t really remember, something about security or somesuch.

Republicans have such cuddly friends.
