Different Parties, Different Standards
The Hill newspaper trumpets: "NRSC plans multi-state attack tying Democrats to Abramoff." Well, of course they are. The facts are there to support the charge, and it's what members of both political parties do in order to minimize electoral fallout from scandals.
But it's interesting that these sorts of "strategy" stories only seem to be written about Republican tactics. Remember when Bill Clinton's partisans were busy charging (or reminding the people) that other presidents had committed adultery, too? Coverage of that little gambit was very different.
What a surprise.

Yeah...
I forgot the part where Vice President Al Gore's Chief of Staff was indicted on leaking the identity of an undercover CIA agent during a time of war as political payback.
I forgot the part where President Clinton's chief political strategist was facing indictment for leaking the identity of an undercover CIA agent during a time of war as political payback.
I forgot the part when the Tom Daschle as Senate Majority Leader was the subject of a criminal probe into his insider trading.
I forgot the part where the last Democratic House Majority leader was indicted on money laundering charges.
Oh, that's right, none of those things ever happened. You have to hand it to the Republican party, in less than 10 years in power they have managed to become more corrupt than the worst Democrats after 40 years.
Cheers.
Same old same old ...
It's sad that the media's double standard is so prevalent that even semi hard core conservatives like me have become numb to the issue. I've seen this pointed out so many times my eyes tend to glaze over whenever it comes up.
The media's bias is a terribly important story. Yet it doesn't seem to get a rise out of anyone any more.
Twist - Set the Kool Aid down.
Do you remember Vice President Al Gore talking about "No controlling authority?"
Do you recall what he was afraid of at the time?
Believe me, Abramoff's Indian Tribe money found plenty of pockets on the left side of the aisle, too. If I were Dorgan or Reid I'd be nervous, too.
Mr. Spinster, yes, it would be nice if all the cheats got the same treatment in the MSM. The headlines should not have been, "Bush returns $6,000 that was received from Abrahmoff client", it should be "All parties in DC returned Abramoff contributions except for Harry Reid and his $47,000". As the Dems deflect their part in this by saying "everyone receives contributions", they sure don't hold that as a standard. Republicans ONLY hope is to come out as the party of reform, and when they do, the Democrats will be the ones not wanting the change.
"I know Jack Abramoff... They [Abramoff and another lobbyist] are Republicans; they were Republicans before they were lobbyists... I think they want to see a Republican reelected in the White House in 2004 more than anything."--Ed Gillespie (CNBC 10/15/2003)
""What the Republicans need is 50 Jack Abramoffs. Then this becomes a different town."--Grover Norquist (National Journal 1995)
“When one of my closest and dearest friends, Jack Abramoff, your most able representative in Washington, D.C., invited me to the islands, I wanted to see firsthand the free-market success and the progress and reform you have made.”--Tom Delay (New Year's 1997/1998)
OK, if you guys want him, you can have him.

Scooter Libby was the first sitting White House employee indicted in over a century, and you are claiming media bias? For the first time ever the sitting House Majority Leader is indicted on criminal charges, and it's the media's fault?
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.
Denial is not a river in Egypt, my friends.

I agree completely. Abramoff was a 2004 Bush Pioneer, which means he personally raised a minimum of $100,000 in bundled contributions for the President. The headlines should have been, "Bush Returns Pittance of What Abramoff Gave to Him--Hopes People Not Paying Attention Are Fooled".
