A Disgraced Gray Lady

The report has been substantiated -- The New York Times, indeed, was prying into the adoption records of John Roberts' children. And the next time you're inclined to tell a lawyer joke, remember this: The lawyer approached by The Times declined to help them pry into the records, on the grounds that doing so would be reprehensible.

Tells you a lot when lawyers -- the butt of so much criticism in this society -- are having to set the standard of honorable behavior for the journalists.

The New York Times owes apologies to the entire Roberts family.
