Round on Ends, 'Hi' in the Middle
That's Ohio, of course. And that's where Republicans won Rob Portman's old House seat in a special election conducted yesterday.
Democrats are supposedly "delighted" with the results, given that the Republican won by only four points in a district where President Bush won handily, and Portman used to garner 70% or so of the vote.
But their glee is misplaced. What the election proved is that Democrats can't win that seat even in a "perfect storm" -- after a divisive, multicandidate Republican primary and with a Democratic candidate who is a Marine.
It will be interesting to see if Democrats learn the wrong "lessons" from this election -- as in '92, when the upset win of Harris Wofford over Richard Thornburgh in a November 1991 special election convinced everyone that health care was the "hot" issue. (As Hillary Clinton et al. learned a couple of years later, the thirst for reform may have driven Wofford's win less than discontent with George HW Bush).
In any case, a win is a win. Dems come up short once again -- unless they've got tons more Marines willing to run under the "cut and run" banner. Not likely.

Carol - The Elephants will soon be crying in their beer when the scandals that are erupting all over the State of OH are taken to court and elected officials and their croanies are hauled off to jail.
Coingate. Governorgate. Noegate. WorkersCompGate. Inflated Home Valuationgate. etc. It keeps getting worse for the Republicans in the State. They have "tainted" their brand with their actions against the residents of OH and I don't think that they will soon forget the hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars lost under the Elephants watch...and sticky fingers.
