Changing the Plan, Stan

Reading the subtext of this article from the Washington Post is quite revealing. In essence, it says that, given the successes of the surge in Iraq, Democrats are being forced to switch their "strategy" -- their strategy for defeat, that is -- by changing their line of attack on the war.

Now that it's more difficult for them to demoralize Americans about the military side of the war effort, they're going to try to talk down the Iraq enterprise by disparaging the political progress.

Quite remarkable, isn't it, that you have one political party in America that accepts progress in Iraq only reluctantly, and immediately goes searching for other grounds upon which to cry surrender?

The animating assumption of this piece is that Democrats are traitors who seek what is worst for our country. This is not true. The Democrats, as a group, are just as patriotic as the Republicans. They differ with Republicans on what is best for our country. This is not treason; this is patriotism. By framing the question in terms of patriotism, you distract the discussion from its substance, which is what our best strategy should be.

The Democrats need to wise up.

First, the administration never defined what success was to the surge, giving them lots of wiggle room to define any sort of changes in Iraq as success.

Second, the article mentions a $15 million ad campaign to sell the surge. Apparently they realize that the truth of the matter is not enought to convince us about the workings of the surge. $15 million is enough to confuse and obfuscate any issue. With that kind of money you can get people to believe almost anything.

Third, and most importantly, the report is not being written by Petraeus. It's being written by the administration. Does that give you any idea what conclusions it will make?

For all I know this surge really is working, whatever that may mean. But I don't trust the truth about it to come from this report.

I get this sick feeling that Freedom's Watch is another swift boat type organization, who's funding will take a year or so to discover. And when it is discovered, we will find Bush cronies and war profiteers who attempted to sell a failed war for personal gain.

As I suspected Freedom's Watch is just another political BS propaganda machine. Made up of Bush cronies and about getting Republicans elected than standing for anything.
