The Ugliness of Stereotypes

If all patriotic red-state Americans didn't already know what the media elites thought of them, this story should leave no doubt.

Obviously, by planning to send men who look like Arabs to a NASCAR event and wiring them up to catch any incidences of bigotry, the sophisticates at NBC thought they might glimpse some redneck yahoos (as they'd see it) acting in a way that those at NBC presume to be typical of red-state America. Their fantasy? Catching on film some bearded guy in overalls with no teeth, a slatternly wife and a brood of unkempt little children, taking a big chaw of tobackey before declaiming, "I hate them A-rabs!"

How ironic. In their misbegotten (and ignorant) efforts to catch the kind of wonderful, wholesome people who frequent NASCAR doing something wrong, the media elite at NBC indulged in the very activity they obviously suspect the NASCAR people are engaging in: Trafficking in insulting, ugly stereotypes.

Shame on them all. They owe NASCAR fans an apology -- and if I were a NASCAR fan, it would be a cold day in Baghdad before you'd catch me watching anything on NBC.

If they want to see some real ugliness, let them wire up a pro-lifer heading to a pro-choice march. But that, of course, would lack the right kind of impact, wouldn't it?

Well, I guess we can feel fortunate that at least they are making an effort to make up the news. They could just say that an encounter or several had occurred without any proof....oh wait, they do that anyhow don't they....well then, I suppose someone's brother-in-law needed some extra money and was willing to stroll the NASCAR grounds in Muslim garb for a few hours.............
