Out of Touch . . . But in a Good Way

That seems to be the new Hollywood meme -- at least judging by the remarks of best supporting actor winner and man-about-town George Clooney:

I would say that, you know, we are a little bit out of touch in Hollywood every once in a while. I think it's probably a good thing. We're the ones who talk about AIDS when it was just being whispered, and we talked about civil rights when it wasn't really popular. And we, you know, we bring up subjects.

It's entertaining to observe that someone actually thinks Hollywood has been serving as a moral exemplar for the rest of the country -- a fact at odds with reality since around the last good World War II film was made. What Clooney obviously doesn't understand is that it may or may not be great to "bring up subjects" -- the question is, what subjects does one bring up, and how are they treated once they are?

Good luck to Clooney and the rest with that vast moviegoing audience that Hollywood appears to be losing: In effect, he told them, "We're out of step with you, but only because we're better."

Looney Clooney can do what he wants. I am not listening or watching. What a waste of time and money Hollywood is now. Why not spend the money on some charity?

I'm OK with celebrating what they do. These actors/directors/etc. are at the top of their game. Bravo.

That said, Clooney is a man on a tall mountain. He looks small to me, and I look small to him.
