Carol Platt Liebau: Limbaugh Outrage

Limbaugh Outrage

Let me get this straight: Prosecutors have taken two years -- without filing charges -- to look into accusations of a third degree felony ("doctor shopping") against Rush Limbaugh?

This despite the fact he's been through rehab, so it's not as though there's a concern with the behavior continuing? This despite the fact they would need to blow through all kinds of privileged doctor-patient information simply to bring a case?

Outrageous.

There is a major flaw in your argument Carol. That is that "he's been through recovery so there is no concern of this behavior continuing."

This statement shows a total lack of understanding of addiction. The long term success rate for drug addiciton is somewhere south of 50%. It is usually lower for prescription drug abuse than for street drugs.

That being said, perhaps Mr. Limbaugh's unfortunate experience will shine some light on what less famous and less fortunate substance abusers attempting recovery go through everyday.

At least Mr. Limbaugh had the resources to deal with his addiction. Many other people don't and I've seen first hand what the devastation of cutbacks in public programs has done to individuals and families trying to rebuild their lives. It is devastating to society as well and puts and increased burden on more expensive healthcare and penal systems which then get stuck with dealing with these people who are not getting help earlier. It is scandalous.

I agree that Limbaugh shouldn't be prosecuted but I hope his case injects some much needed compassion for people who are struggling to rebuild their lives and not being offered the help they so desparately need in order to do so.

It is utterly shameful.

There's nothing good about drug use. We know it. It destroys individuals. It destroys families. Drug use destroys societies. Drug use, some might say, is destroying this country. And we have laws against selling drugs, pushing drugs, using drugs, importing drugs. And the laws are good because we know what happens to people in societies and neighborhoods, which become consumed by them. And so if people are violating the law by doing drugs, they ought to be accused and they ought to be convicted and they ought to be sent up.

What this says to me is that too many whites are getting away with drug use. Too many whites are getting away with drug sales. Too many whites are getting away with trafficking in this stuff. The answer to this disparity is not to start letting people out of jail because we're not putting others in jail who are breaking the law. The answer is to go out and find the ones who are getting away with it, convict them and send them up the river, too.

Rush Limbaugh's celebrity status is secondary to the fundamental privacy issues that arise in this case. What is at stake here is the medical privacy of millions of people in Florida and the need to protect people against unnecessary government intrusion into their medical records. -- Randall Marshall, Florida Legal Director of the ACLU

Headline... Carol Platt Liebau sides with the ACLU over Rush Limbaugh.

And this just in, His Infernal Majesty Satan announces that it is a tad nippy in Hades.

It is outrageous. When this first all started I had my doubts about Rush, addictions are hard...but two years later? It is a disgrace.

Yet, liberals have no problem giving athletes and movie stars chance after chance. It's even hip in those communities to snort a little coke. It's even more hip to be in rehab. The pinnacle of cool is to be a recovering addict. How brave of them to carry on! A role model!

But let it happen to a prominent Republican and he's a monster who's destroying everything good about this country.

I believe in second chances, and even third chances. But let's not be hypocritical based on the sufferer.

I agree, let's not be hypocritical. Heck, I will even go further and let Rush set the terms of his rehabilitation/punishment. So, Rush, what do you think?

OK, hoosegow it is.

I personally would have given you a break, Rush, but anonymous insists we not be hypocritical.
