Forestalling a Filibuster
Given that Senators Graham and DeWine have come out in favor of using the constitutional option if necessary, only one more "Gang of 14" member needs to pledge the same. Then any Democratic filibuster would be futile.
As this Washington Post story points out, in the effort to secure Alito's confirmation, heavy emphasis is being placed on Red State Democrats. That seems to make sense, for who, more than Ben Nelson of Nebraska and Bill Nelson of Florida -- both up for reelection next year -- has a greater vested interest in ensuring that the extremist rhetoric and rage-contorted faces of Chuck Schumer and Teddy Kennedy don't become the faces of the Democratic Party going into 2006?
