A Double Standard

Here is an appeal to the Democrats, penned by Dallas radio talk show host Mark Davis, for more courtesy in their treatment of Republican presidents' Supreme Court nominees. As the author notes, there's a significant contrast between the treatment of Justices Ginsburg/Breyer and that of John Roberts (not to mention Robert Bork, Clarence Thomas, et al.).

It's also worth pointing out one other significant difference between this nominee and Justices Ginsburg/Breyer. The latter have clear partisan affiliations, Justice Ginsburg having been general counsel for the ACLU and Justice Breyer having served on Teddy Kennedy's judiciary committee staff. Judge Alito has none -- working in the solicitor general's office isn't a partisan political post (as Miguel Estrada, who worked in the SG's office during the Clinton era, would doubtless be the first to point out).

Even John Roberts' work in the Reagan White House lacks the sharply partisan edge of Justices Ginsburg and Breyer's backgrounds -- the proper analogy would be one George W. Bush nominee having served as general counsel for the Family Research Council (or National Right to Life) and the other having been a former staffer of Senator Jesse Helms. And if that were the case, can you imagine the screams of anguish that would emanate from both the Dems and the press?

What's with the double standard?

When your entire political philosphy is based on the idea that the "ends justifies the means" this is what you get. The Democrats love to call Republicans hypocrits. Ironic, eh?
