The New Orleans to Come

Michael Barone has some sobering insights about a rebuilt New Orleans. Even as recovering efforts continue to be fraught with various challenges, and the political finger-pointing proceeds apace, it's lucky there are some people giving a thought to the future. One of them, N.Z. Bear of Truth Laid Bear will be joining me for a brief interview.

On May 28, 1987, a nineteen year old German pilot named Mathias Rust flew a single engine Cessna 172B from Hamburg (and after a fuel stop in Helsinki) to Red Square in Moscow. Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, promptly fired the defense and air defense ministers. Eventually 2,000 officers lost their jobs (and yes, the Wikipedia article indicates a lot of this had to do with political maneuvering and consolidation of power, people still lost their jobs.)

No one died as a result of this amazing stunt, but punishment was forthcoming.

We know people have died as a result of Hurricane Katrina, perhaps thousands. And Michael Brown still has a job? Michael Chertoff still has a job? Think about it. The former Soviet Union, a regime riddled with corruption, incompetence and general cluelessness, was more efficient at dealing with official idiocy than we are?

Think about it
