Mercy & Justice

There's mercy: Over at Truth Laid Bear, proprietor NZ Bear discusses his inspiring new project, undertaken in response to this piece by Hugh Hewitt.

The idea is simple: to create a web portal where organizations in the area affected by Katrina can broadcast to the world their needs, and the world -- and in particular, similar organizations elsewhere --- can step up to meet those needs.

Check out NZ's page, and help if you can.

There's justice, of sorts, too:

Read this piece on National Review by James Robbins - noting that, compared to Hurricane Andrew, response time for the National Guard was relatively quick, especially given the maze of federal bureaucracy.

People need to understand some of the administrative difficulties that accompany any deployment of government resources, especially massive ones.

Things are made increasingly more difficult when the government decides to put it thumb on the side of not helping. For example, earlier in the week, FEMA refused to let the Red Cross bring aid into NO because it might make people less likely to evacuate.

Just a single incident, one might hope, but unfortunately not. According to the President of Jefferson Parish being interviewed by Tim Russert today, there are plenty more examples where that one came from.

Earlier this week WalMart tried to send three trucks filled with water into Jefferson Parish. FEMA told the drivers to turn around because the water wasn't needed.

The US Coast Guard docks a ship in the harbor with 1000 gallons of diesel fuel and tells the people to come and get it right away. When the trucks get there to unload the diesel, FEMA tells the Coast Guard not to give them any.

Yesterday FEMA went in and cut the emergency communication lines in Jefferson Parish. The local government has set armed guards to prevent FEMA from doing so again.
