Civil Rights Hypocrites
MoveOn.org has denied credible reports that they intended to use images of Hurricane Katrina victims in ads to run in opposition to the Supreme Court nomination of John Roberts. It's reasonable to suspect that MoveOn did intend to use the ploy, and then reversed course at the last minute.
In fact, the left generally seems to have fallen upon the strategy of simply trying to claim that Republicans "don't care" about African-Americans. This theory is bolstered by indications that the Democrats have decided to try to turn the Roberts hearings into a sort of "civil rights" tutorial -- with the implicit accusation that both the nominee (and the Republicans) are insufficiently concerned with "civil rights" as defined by them (after all, no one on the left seems concerned about the civil right to pray in public, or similiar matters).
According to this piece, the Democrats are going call as witnesses at the Roberts hearing the following people: A male coach whose suit for gender discrimination was upheld when he was fired for complaining about mistreatment of a girls' sports team and Rep. John Lewis, who was beaten during the Selma civil rights march.
Well, Republicans need to make it clear to the Democrats that they are not the ones who need the civil rights tutorial. After all, Abraham Lincoln was a Republican.
And, since a Supreme Court seat is at issue, it's worth noting that Chief Justice Edward Douglass White -- a member of the KKK -- was originally appointed to the Supreme Court by Grover Cleveland, a Democrat. And it was FDR -- hardly a Republican-- who nominated Hugo Black for the Court, the only other Justice to have been a member of the KKK.
The Civil Rights bills of the '60's were passed because of the masterful work of Senator Everett Dirksen (R-IL), and with Republicans voting in favor in much greater percentages than Democrats -- some of whom (Robert Byrd) led a filibuster, while others (Albert Gore, Sr.) steadfastly opposed the bill to the end.
And the Republicans have no former members of the KKK in their caucus -- much less as a former majority leader (paging Robert Byrd, D-W.VA).
So perhaps while the Democrats try to offer a tutorial to the Republican on Civil Rights, the Republicans should politely note that, given the Dems' history, it would be much more appropriate for them to be offering the civil rights lesson.

Carol, you are sooooo last year's talking points. Didn't you hear Ken Mehlman? He saying thing like, "Some Republicans gave up on winning the African American vote, looking the other way or trying to benefit politically from racial polarization."
All y'all good Republicans are supposed to be 'fessing up to your party's use of the Southern strategy and claiming it was a mistake.
Carol,
I would like to see the Republican party try harder to get more of the African American vote. Dwelling on the HISTORY of the parties won't get the job done.
I am an African American who joined the GOP because I think its pro business, anti tax, anti crime agenda, coupled with its emphasis on personal responsiblity and high morals, offer better solutions that the Democrat's "all blacks are victims" agenda.
The GOP needs to emphasize its PRESENT solutions to the many serious problems facing the black community. President Bush's ability to do that, working with black clergy on moral issues, helped him get re-elected.
It's pathetic that you have to go back to Grover Cleveland and Abraham Lincoln to come up with defenses for the disgusting republican record and civl rights. SHAME ON YOU!! SHAME SHAME SHAME!!! Do you really think your readers are that stupid?
Carol,I am sure you are able to ignore the loonbats of course thanks for pointing this out to add to my Bobby Byrd file on the KKK and the left as was shown by David Duke's and other racist aryan suppremacy group's support for Cindy Sheeehan's ragtag alliance. Great post!
Don't worry goat....she ignores everyone. It's easy when you are a brainwashed conservadroid.
We can add to that list of outright racist Dems with the addition of the Gov's of Alabama and Arkansaw who called out the Guard to block integration to public schools both Democrats. I am from Al. and during the race riots of the 60's the south was run by Democrats many of the Scoop Jackson type and many of the Robert Byrd KKK type. My relatives some virulently racist were Democrats. That is why so many conservative blacks are from the south, Dr.Rice is just a little older than I and we grew up just 15 miles apart. I have not a racist bone in my body though I am very prejudiced about lazy ignorant fools with no sense of personal responsibility wanting me/us/big gov to take care of them. The welfare state run by a corrupt socialist Democrat run New Orleans beauracracy has a just more than a little toxic mud on their face. Welfare is the modern day shackles of repression as it traps the poor into an endless cycle of dependance on others than themselves, slavery. Who started and built welfare,Democrats and who supports it today? Democrats, who wants to remake the US into the socialist welfare workers paradise of failing old Europe? You guessed it,Democrats, who favors oligarchy by judicial fiat over the vote of the people? I bet you can guess again, yep,Democrats.
Goat, nice history lesson. Yes, the Yellow Dawg Southern Democrats from Reconstruction through the middle 1960s were primarily racists. The problem for you is that the Democratic Party by and large left them behind after the 1950's and 1960's.
It took the brilliance of Richard Nixon to recognize that by making race politics a wedge issue the Republican party could win the solid South. This approach was called the Southern Strategy. It is precisely this appeal to the basest of race-baiting that has lifted the Republican party to national dominance.
The Republican Party of 2000 can trace their lineage back more to George Wallace than to Barry Goldwater. Congratulations, Goat, your attitude is an exact embodiment of what Ken Mehlman is seeking to make amends for.
Do you actually think a racist could have a chance of winning in the south? Nice try though Twister,in order for the GOP to win in the south they must attract a significant portion of the black vote, they have done this through personal empowerment and economic opportunity not socialistic handouts in a burgeoning southern economy. Herman Cain is another example, the father of Godfather's Pizza chain. The color of your skin has nothing to do with the ability to prosper in our society and the only race baiting now taking place is black leaders in the DNC as Sharpton and Jackson.Which party supports personal empowerment through private SSI accounts and reducing taxes on small business?Which party favors socialism in the form of big government handouts and socialized medical, affirmative action(racism) and rule by judicial fiat? Why is the DNC leadership now blocking a congressional inquiry into the mistakes of Katrina? May I suggest you read Star Parker,Thomas Sowell,Mr.Cain and listen to what Bill Cosby and other black leaders have to say a bit more before you commence your blame game and hit the keypad, sir.
Goat, what exactly do you think Ken Mehlman meant by claiming that some Republicans have been "trying to benefit politically from racial polarization?" What was he trying to say when he announced, "I am here today as the Republican chairman to tell you we were wrong."
Are you really claiming that the Chairman of the Republican National Comittee was just making idle small talk?
Talk about delusion...
