Hiring a Pugilist

Ed Rollins -- Huckabee's campaign consultant -- has a reputation for fighting hard and also for criticizing Republicans.

If Huckabee were really serious about efforts to run a turn-the-other-cheek campaign, he wouldn't have a guy like Rollins on his staff. And the negative ad Huckabee was supposedly yanking wouldn't have run on Iowa television.

The fact remains that Huckabee's holier-than-thou attitude feels like a pose; Douglas MacKinnon points out Huckabee's history of smears.

He also notes the McCain-Huckabee mutual admiration society. Well, Huckabee has done McCain a great favor. He himself is such an electoral disaster in the making that he's done the nearly impossible: Made McCain seem like an acceptable Republican choice by comparison.

Update: Check out this post at Hamilton, Madison, Jay, cleverly titled "Governor Huckabee 'Hucks Up' Again."

Carol, were you aware that three of your six posts of 2008 have been spent bashing Mike Huckabee?* And it's not just you. The Republican powers-that-be across the spectrum are flipping out about the Huck. Even Howard Dean did not face as much antagonism from the Democratic power brokers that Mike Huckabee is taking from the Republican establishment.

*I do hope that this number drops rather precipitously from 50% as the year moves on. ;)

3 of 6 posts in the first three days of the year have been about a candidate who has risen to the top of the polls in Iowa as we approach that state's presidential primary caucus - the first such event in the nation's presidential election cycle.

There MUST be some kind of conspiracy!

It's a power play by the political establishment I tell you!
