A Debased Debate

Jon Stossel has some pungent -- and dead accurate -- thoughts on the quality of the global warming debate (or perhaps, more accurately, the global warming non-debate).

Well, at least there's some progress here. Stossel now admits that we have a warming planet and anthropogenic CO2 may be its cause.

It's interesting to see the workings of Stossel, the oil industry, and their fellow travelers pushing and framing this "debate," which has gone from out and out denial to grabing at any of the difficulties to understand this global phenomenon and making them out to be grand faults that undermine the entire thinking.

This reminds me of creationists who point to a break in the fossil record, the work of one or two sloppy researchers, or the true scientific debate over a finer point of speciation and say that this is proof that the entire theory of evolution is a house of cards.

Scientists tell us that the earth is on a very slow spirial path into the sun. Extrapolating backwards millions of years, the earth would have been so far from the sun that it wouldn't have been able to sustain life for a very long time.

Stossel's report appears to me to be rather accurate. I don't think anyone other than the Algore and Co. think the debate is over. It will go on for quite a while yet as climatologists gather data and try to understand what is really happening. Nobel Peace prizes, Oscars, etc. don't really settle scientific questions at all.

Cliff, I can't imagine what scientist you have been talking to. The earth is in a very stable orbit that is going to stay right where it is unless there is a change it the angular momentum of the earth, something that is pretty difficult to do. Do you know anything about orbital mechanics?
