A Very Bad Idea
As the editors of National Review point out, there are no redeeming features to the "comprehensive immigration reform" bill that's approaching the Senate floor. Enforcement measures -- like the 700 mile fence -- passed in the last Congress have been ignored, which bodes ill for any of the provisions in this legislation designed to enhance security (or avoid a repeat of the disastrous 1986 amnesty).
Of course the Democrats are delighted. As KFI radio in Los Angeles reported this morning, the immigrants who will be legalized are overwhelming likely to be poor, to vote for higher taxes and bigger government. The question is: Why in the world would Republicans jeopardize their grassroots support -- and, more importantly, national security -- for this piece of junk?
In my opinion, John McCain already had almost no chance of ever winning the nomination. This is the final nail in the coffin of his presidential ambitions.
Update: Hugh Hewitt has the GOP talking points for this ridiculous bill, and they are -- to put it politely -- pure garbage. Anyone with the sense God gave a goat can see that the bill will, in essense, dismantle half the border fence before it's built and allow amnesty, while the enforcement mechanisms will ultimately go unaddressed.
The GOP leadership is making a mistake of epic proportions if it believes that the only people who will be angry about this bill are loud-mouthed bigoted rednecks. Any American who takes the terrorist threat seriously -- and believes that our immigration laws should be taken seriously -- has to be outraged at this transparent sell-out. And that group of Americans includes most of the GOP base.

Bush has been for amnesty all along. The dead albatross hangs from his neck.
Earth to Carol- we get it, you hate Bush. If he did not support amnesty you would find fault there. Why can't you ever come up with a solution other than Bush is bad? What about your Democrat leadership, they too are for this amnesty. Someday all these supposed "leaders" will have to live in this world they are crafting. They won't get serious until illegal aliens start taking the politicians own jobs. If they think the illegal aliens are just doing menial jobs, low paying, that no American wants to do, come out and see whole industries taken over here. We are the last of a dying breed, American construction workers. Someday soon if you want work done on your house you better know how to speak spanish or use sign language. Pretty soon the politicians will say there are no contractors, we better let these "new" citizens get contractors licenses. Wait and see. It is already starting to happen. I am witnessing this with my own eyes. Some may say it's just construction, get a good education and push a pencil, but there are some American kids who don't do so well in school and could still have a good career. That and summer work for the youth are being eliminated. Once it was just landscaping and picking fruit. Now 9/10ths of concrete, framing, drywall, painting, plastering, car washing, fast food, you get the picture, there is an invasion taking place and no one wants to acknowledge the fact. It is too late. But if we give up and give in now our kids will not even recognize their own country. Maybe we are all saving a little money now but someday soon there will be a high price to pay. Everybody will feel differently about this situation when it is their own job or career that is being wiped out.
