Hey, Not Everyone Was Critical!
Sure, Vice President Cheney may not have approved of Nancy Pelosi's ignorant attempt at conducting shuttle diplomacy; okay, the Washington Post excoriated her for it, too.
But not everybody hated what Pelosi tried to achieve -- leaders of assorted terrorist groups were absolutely thrilled.
I guess it all comes down to whose opinion matters, doesn't it?

I don't know of any statues that Pelosi has violated. ;)
However, there are some who think she has breached The Logan Act which prevents unauthorised individuals from negotiating with foreign governments.
If so, then three Republicans (Frank Wolf, Joe Pitts and Robert Aderholt) also broke this law when they visited Syria just prior to Pelosi's visit.
The question is - do members of congress have the authority to negotiate with foreign governments?
Both the Senate and the House of Reps have standing committees on foreign relations.
Bottom line - Pelosi and her companions were not breaking the law. They have the authority to negotiate with foreign governments because they are elected government representatives from the United States. Moreover, the fact that both houses in Congress have oversight of foreign affairs shows that negotiations with foreign governments is not limited to the executive or his appointments (Ambassadors).
OSO,
You are mistaken. The House is NOT authorized to partake of such missions without approval of the executive branch. Your interpretation of the Logan Act is unsound. Pelosi and her cohorts were elected to be members of the US House of Representatives, not ambassadors. She and they are clearly in the wrong as is your assessment of the situation.
Uhhhh, where's "Earth to Carol" now???
The only story I see here, is five deferment Cheney wants to slap down another female, even though last time it resulted in Scooter being indicted and found guilty.
Members of Congress, as well as Governors, travel abroad extensively. It seems very much in keeping with their Constitutional powers. Very likely Pelsoi stayed within the framework provided and coordinated by the State Department.
I would expect that to be the only story you see, Earth (Opposite).
I don't know the law, so I can't comment. I certainly wouldn't want to restrict any American from travelling abroad even in times of conflict. But the traveller should be aware that there may be consequenses - especially if you're a politician.
I think Democrats will pay a heavy price for three things regarding this trip:
1) Americans will NEVER forget the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the United States of America humiliating herself with the head scarf!
2) Americans will remember that the ISLAMIC FASCISTS are the greatest supporters of this trip.
3) It won't sit well with Americans that, once again, anti-war activists in the Democratic Party are "negotiating" with the enemy during a time of war.
Let the chips fall where they may. The Democrats have played a poor hand this time.
