More French Moral Obtuseness
So France is referring to Iran as a "a great country, a great people and a great civilization which is respected and which plays a stabilizing role in the region" (emphasis added).
That's right -- he's referring to the same Iranian regime that has been backing Hezbollah, is likely hiding Hezbollah's leader in its embassy, is developing nuclear weapons despite the impotent entreaties of the UN, supports terrorism in Iraq, has openly called for Israel's elimination and has been collaborating with North Korea. A very stabilizing force, indeed.
Some erstwhile sophisticates might praise the "nuance" of France's approach, noting that its foreign minister is, at least, getting a chance to meet with representatives of the Iranian government. As far as I'm concerned, it's hard to know whether France is just pandering to Iran and trying to further their own ambitions, even at the cost of global safety -- much the same way as it pandered to Iraq's former dictator -- or whether some in that country are so blinded by moral obtuseness and anti-Semitism that they actually believe what they're saying.
Just as there's no honor among thieves, and no reason to believe that a nuclear Iran would put France last on its list of nations to threaten.

Persia is one of the great civilizations. Stable? They were one of the great civilizations when Alexander passed through. The abilities of it's diplomats are legendary. Give them their due. They've also been evil, nefarious backstabbers for the same length of time. The other thing to be aware of is that they are aggressive posturers, with few military skills. Their armed forces. while large, are even more inept than Iraqs. Bear in mind, though, they would be much worse to occupy than Iraq.
One of the great civilizations of the 7th and 8th century maybe. That's where they seem to be stuck. What contributions have they made to the world lately, other than producing homicidal maniacs? Oh yeah, they found oil...
