Another Paper Tiger
Kofi Annan doesn't have the guts to stand up to terrorists across the world, but no one's a tougher talker than he when it comes time to confront a democracy that he knows won't come after him. Annan is typical of the UN in his reflexive anti-Israeli impulses, which have extended to accusing the Israelis of intentionally hitting a UN position in Lebanon.
The Israelis deny hitting the UN observers on purpose, and so far, there doesn't appear to be any reason not to believe them.
It's worth wondering: Where are Annan's similar sentiments of outrage when Islamofascists target people every day who are just as innocent as the UN observers whose right to security he defends so stridently?

Sorry, this is off point, but I had to submit it.
How many libs does it take to screw in a light bulb?
Doesn't matter. They won't see the light anyway.
From a letter writer to the Factor.
How many wingnuts does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
One. But it takes an educated liberal to teach them how to use the on/off switch.
I notice that the BBC is now reporting that Israel ignored clear pleas from the UN soldiers.
the blue helmuted rapists (sorry - peacekeepers) from the UN.
It was US troops who raped and murdered some teenage girl in Iraq just recently.
The US should therefore feel quite at home in the UN.
Just when are you wingnuts going to move from UN-abuse to UN-fear?
You know... UN troops at the border wanting to invade America...dark conspiracies involving Zbignew Breszinski... training African Americans to rise up against whites... all that Turner Diary stuff.
I apologise, I shouldn't call you wingnuts.
The right is fracturing at the moment, and it appears as though the conservative voices here represent those who are completely behind George W. Bush (around 35% of Americans).
What name would you like us moonbats to call you?
Rather than giving lip service Kofi Anumb, Bush is encouraging him to do his duty. What problem could one possibly have with this, other than to believe it's a big waste of time? Yet, it's still a good move and the right one.
OSO, "how many wingnuts..." not nearly as clever. Try again. Also, what's "an educated liberal?"
Never seen one before.
Also, "the right is fracturing..."
On another thread, it was claimed the right never calls out it's own should there be disagreement. Which is it? Do they or don't they? Or by fracturing, do you mean they fall down a lot?
"In an impassioned speech, Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora warned that more people would die if the ceasefire was delayed, and called for a Lebanese-Israeli prisoner exchange as part of plan to end the fighting."
From the BBC article. Last paragraph.
Right. We'll cease fire as long as we get our prisoner exchange, which is why we kidnapped the Israeli soldiers in the first place. So we lost a few people - we have more.
I don't think so.
Let's assume the Israelis did in fact kill the UN workers on purpose - why would you ask them to investigate? Isn't that pretty stupid...to ask someone to investigate themselves? Maybe the Hezzies did it for PR...how should the Israelis know - send in a CSI team into a war zone to investigate?
The UNIFILs were just there as observers - why didn't the UN pull them out when war broke out? pretty dumb.
The BBC article says that the UN observers contacted the Israelis multiple times, but never got an answer...doesn't that seem odd?
SST,
"I got a personal assurance for you: keep your shiny blue helmets the hell out of the way and you won't get hurt, you dumbass."
That's funny! Brutish, but funny.
Salient,
A little bitter today, are we? I think you have at least one thing backward. In my opinion, it's the Democratic Party that is fracturing. But I guess we'll see which of us is correct come November.
Greg,
Yeah a bit annoyed. I was testing to see if the cowards who keep dissing the UN can take a bit of their own name-calling medicine. Apparently they can't. They can easily slag off at the UN about being rapists but they can't handle the US being shown to be bad at all.
I mean, it's not as though the UN invaded Guatemala and overthrew a democratically elected president and started a civil war that killed hundreds of thousands. No. It was America that did that.
And it's not as though the UN invaded Haiti and set up a military government that oppressed the population and left them impoverished. No. It was America that did that.
And it's not as though the UN deposed a democratically elected president in Iran and set up a puppet dictator, thus planting the seeds for Islamic fundamentalism. No. It was America that did that.
And it's not as though the UN trained Mujahadeen rebels in Afghanistan to oppose the Soviet occupation, and then left them to rot and set themselves up for the Taliban to take over. No. It was America that did that.
And it's not as though the UN had a emergency services agency that was incompetent and corrupt, leaving poverty stricken folk in New Orleans to drown. No. It was America that did that.
Glass houses and motes in the eye come to mind at this point.
Distaste for America runs so deep that, for example, at the recent World Cup in Germany the American team was the only one asked not to display its national flag on the team bus. In
South Korea, traditionally a U.S. ally, two-thirds of people under 30 said in a recent poll that if there were war between
North Korea and the United States, they would side with North Korea.
"Anti-Americanism runs deeper and is qualitatively different than in the past, when it was largely attributable to unpopular U.S. policies," Andrew Kohut, director of the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, says in a new book on the subject, "America Against the World."
Polls show that people who have visited the United States or have been involved in exchange programs have a more favorable impression of the country than those who have not, and one of the questions discussed at the Washington meeting was how to attract more visitors and increase exchange programs.

Good work America!
Regarding South Korea. Let's bring the troops home from there. It's only been--what?--50 years?
It's clear we aren't wanted there, and frankly the SoKos can fend for themselves.
I thought so, Salient. I can take it.
elarson, we tried to bring the troops home, and they cried "You can't leave us now!"
Exactly. They talk a big game until right around the time we actually decide to leave. Then they worry about Li'l Kim and his malnourished county with its large, though somewhat less malnourished army.
Still, I think the SoKo's can take care of themselves. (Incidentally, is the Korean War an example of "sustainable cease fire" that the UN types talk about with respect to Israel and everyone else?)
