A Different Way to Think About It
In a piece pondering the significance of Katie Couric's ascension to the CBS anchor chair, Jill Abramson moans that "there are still few women successfully leading the cornerstone institutions of our society."
Huh. No man can say it, so I will. Women have been raising the people who become the cornerstones of our society. Certainly, it's fair to say that women shouldn't have to be satisfied with that, but no one can deny that it's a contribution of extraordinary importance.

Years ago I worked for a woman in the old Bell System....she was in upper management--quite a feat considering the times. She felt that her mission was to mentor (that word wasn't used then -- I think she called it coaching) all of her reporting people and groom them to be promotable....she said that in the Company, your success could be measured by how many people were at higher levels than you because of you......she got it
