Off to a Bad Start
John O'Sullivan makes a convincing argument that the Democrats are off to a bad start in the Alito nomination. By concentrating too heavily on their own political commitments and their zeal to defeat him, they're acting imprudently -- and not in a way designed to rally the public support that would be needed to bring the nomination down.
He's right. But then again, it may be that the Dems are more focused on showing their special interest group masters how tough they can be -- having essentially given up on the hope of actually being effective.
It's still early, though.

You are not giving the Dems the credit they deserve. With the notable exception of Russ Feingold, the Dems are trying to frighten the Republicans into dumping Alito by proving exactly how boring a filibuster would be.
From the official transcript...
Joe Biden: Bloviate, bloviate, bloviate [everyone falls asleep for 10 minutes] bloviate?
Judge Alito: Yes.
Biden: Bloviate...
How long do you think the Republicans could stand up to this before they run from the Senate chambers with blood running from their ears?
Shock and awe, my friends, shock and awe.
Mr. Twister:
I'm supposed to be ignoring you. But that was funny!
