Facts About the Patriot Act

Here are some facts about the Patriot Act.

When one remembers how disgracefully political the Democratic approach to renewing the Act has been, can you really blame those of us who are highly skeptical that the Dems would have behaved more responsibly in amending FISA, should the President have asked them to?

Carol, two points that should prove that this dawg won't hunt.

First, what were the votes on the orginal PATRIOT Act--you know, back when the President would have asked to have FISA amended? It passed the House by a vote of 357-66 and the Senate by a vote of 98-1. It is difficult to see a whole lot of Dems digging in their heels.

Second, Sen. Mike Dewine (R-OH) wanted to amend FISA in 2002 to lower the threashold from "probable cause" to "a reasonable basis" in FISA wiretapping of foreign agents. This proposal died in committee because the Bush Justice department testified there were Constitutional problems in making the change. The administration types testifed that the PATRIOT Act and FISA were more than sufficient for them.

Given that the Dems backed the President on the PATRIOT Act, and it was the Republican Bush administration that killed the FISA changes in 2002, your post is both specious and disingenuous.

Please play again and better luck in the future. I hope your next talking point has a slightly longer shelf life than this one.

Oh, this dog hunts alright. The only thing you've proven, Mr. Twister, is the absolute un-seriousness of the Democratic Party. They supported (or rather voted for - I seriously doubt any actual support for) the PATRIOT Act only when they were afraid of public backlash if they didn't.

After a couple of years of vicious (and sadly unrebuked) attacks on the President, the Democrats began to feel their oats and show their true colors. Now, instead of taking measures to protect the American public against further attack, the Democrats gleefully brag about killing the PATRIOT Act!

Given that attitude, well known to anyone who pays attention, the Democrats truly cannot be counted on to work in good faith on any topic, National Security or otherwise. Their lust for political advantage is simply too great for them to control.

As far as resisting any changes to FISA, I don't blame the President. There's no need. He is operating on firm ground with complete constitutional authority to conduct surveillance against enemy combatants no matter who or where they are. And given the record of the Democrats, I certainly wouldn't want them involved in such a serious and delicate issue.

They're simply not to be trusted.
