Wishing the Best for Dreier (& DeLay!)

With the news of Tom DeLay's indictment, it was also announced that David Dreier will assume the Majority Leader's duties.

We wish him well.

Now, for a little perspective, here is a valuable piece from The American Spectator.

Money quote:

[S]imilar transactions [to the ones forming the basis for the DeLay indictment] similar transactions are conducted by both parties in many states, including Texas. In fact, on October 31, 2002, the Texas Democratic Party sent the Democratic National Committee (DNC) $75,000, and on the same day, the DNC sent the Texas Democratic Party $75,000. On July 19, 2001, the Texas Democratic Party sent the DNC $50,000 and, again on the same day, the DNC sent the Texas Democratic Party $60,000. On June 8, 2001, the Texas Democratic Party sent the DNC $50,000. That very same day, the DNC sent the Texas Democratic Party $60,000.

Looks like partisan prosecutor Ronnie Earle may have another failed prosecution on his hands. But even if so, no doubt he'll get good press -- Ken Starr could only wish the arbiters of the MSM had been so insistent on proper context in his case.

BTW: Don't fall for the whole "he's unbiased because he's prosecuted 12 Dems and only 3 Republicans." That's not the question. In Texas, there are liberal and conservative Democrats. Here's the right question: How many liberals vs. conservatives has Earle prosecuted?

I don't know whether he is guilty or not, but I hope Delay will step down permanently from his leadership position. Call me naive, but I expect our political leaders to be as pure as the driven snow. Three admonishments by the House Ethics Committee as well as taking an expensive overseas trip paid for by lobbyists and now this indictment, indicate to me that he is not a good leader for our party, or the nation.

It has been my standard practice never to delete comments, however insulting or (in my view) misguided.

Today, however, I have deleted comments to the post above by both "Cookie Jill" and "Draino" because they were, in my judgment, both inappropriately personal (not about me, BTW) and irrelevant to the topic at hand.

Please know that if I ever delete other comments in the future, I will post a note like this one.

Carol, what exactly queered the deal with respect to Dapper Dave Dreier taking over Delay's spot? Dreier is tapped by the Speaker of the House to take over from the Hammer, the Republicans caucus, and suddenly Blunt is in. What the?!?!?

According to Roll Call, "Republican leaders also heard a vocal outcry from outside conservative groups and activists who objected to Dreier’s elevation." Wolf Blitzer said Dreier was out because he was from California, was pro-choice and had...ahem...other issues.

Carol, you are a conservative Republican from California. What could these other issues be?
