Choosing a Leader
Richard Brookhiser offers a glowing assessment of Rudy Giuliani's presidential potential, while addressing his shortcomings frankly.
. . . advocating American political and religious liberty, free enterprise, limited government, military strength and traditional values.

Carol "Then came 9/11." I agree on this point. I will wait to see who the Dems nominate. Choice of Dem and GOP may well be decided more than on social choice questions. The choice could be, will the US republic continue to exist.
Mr. Brookhiser's is a short list of Guiliani's shortcomings. For example, last time I heard, Guiliani was pro gun control, even going so far as to support suing gun manufacturers trying to put them out of business. An awful lot of hunters will balk at that stance. Guiliani is also a proponent of liberal immigration. An awful lot of conservatives are not going to like his stand on that. And Guiliani "strongly support[ed]" (his own words) McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform.
How much of Guiliani's baggage voters are willing to ignore may depend on how well he is able, in a few months of campaigning, to convince them that the nation is, indeed, facing a serious terrorist threat, something President Bush has been unable to do in six years.
MAy I make two points:
1. I think we tend to underestimate the magnificance of the American experience. We have endured may tragadies, we will endure again.
2. Mr. Guliani is a rare individual - He is a man of personal courage, he is an able administrator and he understands the real problems facing us. I beseach my more conservative brethren, Please give him a chance. He is on the same side as were are on th survival issues.
The problem I have is that there isn't any real chance to make a proper choice. There are those that run and have name recognition, so they get all the press. It's like it's forced down our throats.
Of those I'd pick Romney.
Of the others with no press I'd pick
sheesh, edited out John Cox for president.... I guess I'll see ya all later - I've gone the way of "the Editor". Maybe it was unintentional, but I feel Carol has decided censorship is the best course for her blog.
