Some Bobby Byrd mini-mes

With this kind of pork being shoveled by the GOP -- acting like Democrats -- let's just say that the Republicans are lucky, very lucky.

Why? Well, if they're spending like drunken sailors (in a way that disappoints any small government conservative) they're doing it in a time when other issues are so pressing that their base (and other Americans) aren't as likely either to sit out an election or defect to the Democrats. That is, it's in a time when the public is depending on Republicans to defend America in the war on terror and to remain sane on social issues.

But as they belly up to the big government trough, the Republicans had just better hope that the public's patience doesn't wear out. How sad -- 11 years after 1994, some Republicans are starting to act like Bobby Byrd mini-mes . . . at least on some spending issues (and thankfully, only on spending issues.
